CONDITION CHECK

This serves the same purpose as the press-check in a semi-auto pistol. While gripping the revolver with the strong hand in a proper firing grip (finger off the trigger, of course), cradle the support hand under the revolver so that the cylinder can be gripped between thumb and fingers. With the firing hand thumb, open the cylinder catch, ease the cylinder open with the support hand fingers, and visually inspect the chambers for cartridges. Next, inspect the primers to see how many are fired. In the dark, you can disengage the grip of the support hand to run your fingertip around the chambers to check for cartridges, although it will be almost impossible to feel whether the primers are indented. If in doubt, reload the whole cylinder.
